Junji Ito’s Cat Diary: Yon & Mu

This is slightly embarrassing to admit but: the targeted ads on insta showed me a sweater that I immediately coveted, an image of a cat biting someone’s hand. I put it on my Christmas list, and Santa kindly delivered it, but in the meantime, I also looked up more information about it, and located the source, which I then duly requested from the library, because I don’t want to be a total poser (only a semi-poser).

Junji Ito mostly, I gather, writes horror manga, but this book is a delightful story of his day-to-day life with two mercurial cats. There are playful flirtations with horror and ominousness — and I really want to read his other books now! — but it’s mostly a charming depiction of how aloof and coy cats can be; how they can seem cruel and sadistic in their willingness to shower some people with affection, and not others. I really enjoyed it.
