Someone on goodreads wrote “to nie książka, to kołderka!” [This isn’t a book, it’s a blanket!] which is actually a great way to describe it. What a charming, winsome text. It’s the diary of a young queer Jewish guy who works at the zoo, kept from 2013-2023. The entries are brief and sporadic — it’s not an exhaustive account of his life, but a collections of observations, anecdotes, outbursts. He reflects on the traumas of the Second World War and the cruelty of bigoted politicians. He lovingly recounts conversations with elderly women he is friends with. And, of course, he writes about the animals he cares for. It’s unlike any diary I’ve ever read. I adored it.
PS. You can find an excerpt in English on Words without Borders, translated by Dawid Mobolaji!
