Triage, Claudia Rankine

I waited until I was finished reading Triage to read Sarah Dowling’s review (which was the right choice — it has spoilers) and as I expected, it was tremendously helpful in thinking through what the novel does.

It’s an odd novel (I still think it’s more of a prose poem, but I recognize it’s a flimsy distinction), and fascinating in the way it feels both easy to read and incredibly dense. I had to stop and reread entire pages because I’d realize that I hadn’t really understood what they were saying; like I had only skimmed the surface. But every time I slowed down, I was rewarded with a glimpse of the depths.
